Edric van Vredenburgh is pleased to announce the formation of a company ZigZag at
EVV Ltd whose primary purpose is to create and sell contempory furniture and objects
of style using traditional techniques and craftsmanship of high quality yet still
retaining the charm of being by hand.
Christine Van der Hurd the well-known carpet and jewellery designer, is supplying
most of the present designs.
We will make beautiful and useful things adding brightness, quality and
sophistication that the discerning eye needs in this throwaway age of the 21st
century.
We have worked for a considerable time to enable us to produce a quality product.
The first collection is Cloisonné Enamel, this will be enlarged and developed as we
are experimenting with materials and designs constantly. Enamel is a very exciting
material which can be used with both bright and subtle colours. Although made in
Europe in the 19th century by such people as Barbedienne the origins of Cloisonné in
China probably began in the 14th of 15th century. Its construction is very complicated,
the object is made to the form required in either copper or brass [bronze] then the
design is applied by adding small pieces of wire in either a geometric or other forms
leaving indentations that are filled with the liquid colour, this is then fired in a
kiln then more colour is added and re fired until it reaches the surface of the wire,
the object is then rubbed down with coarse charcoal until the surface is smooth. At
this point a fine charcoal is used to polish the surface, originally the surface was
mercury gilded, now electroplating is used in either gold, silver or nickel depending
on the effect required.
We will have a core stock of lighting, place settings, objects and furniture. We
will also undertake certain custom specials and quantity orders.
Although we strive to have exactness it should be noted that since everything is
made by hand and many colours are mixed separately there is sometimes a variation in
colour. We will strive to complete all orders as quickly as possible but it must be
understood that because enamel is not machine finished the process takes some weeks.
